Fishing Platte Bay is an exciting way to experience the exceptional waters of Lake Michigan, especially in the Platte Bay area, known for its diverse and abundant fish species. Captain Dan Stewart, brings a wealth of experience and local knowledge to every trip, providing anglers with opportunities to catch some of the region’s most sought-after fish. Here’s what you can expect when fishing Platte Bay:
1. Targeted Species • Coho Salmon: We often targets coho salmon, particularly in the late summer and fall months. Platte Bay is a prime location for these fish, which migrate to the Platte River for spawning. • Chinook (King) Salmon: While Platte Bay itself is known for coho, we also takes clients out to target King salmon, which are abundant in the area as well, especially in the late summer and early fall. • Lake Trout: These deep-water fish are commonly caught in Platte Bay, especially in the summer when the water warms. Lake trout are a popular species for anglers looking for a strong fight and substantial catch. • Steelhead: Spring and fall are prime times for steelhead fishing around Platte Bay. We targets these migratory trout, known for their acrobatic jumps and powerful runs. 2. Fishing Techniques • Trolling: As with most Lake Michigan fishing charters, trolling is the most common technique. Trolling involves using downriggers, divers, and lead-core lines to target fish at varying depths. ChromeSeekers uses spoons, plugs, and flies to attract fish and provide a successful outing. • Casting and Shore Fishing: Depending on the season and fish migration patterns, casting from the boat or even shore fishing near the Platte River mouth can be productive for both coho and steelhead. • Drift Fishing (for Steelhead): In the spring and fall, fishing the Platte River itself or near its mouth can involve drift fishing for steelhead, often using spawn sacs, worms, or other live baits. 3. Seasonal Patterns • Spring (April-June): Early spring offers some great steelhead action, with lake trout also being a common target. The warming waters and migrations bring in fish, making it a good time to fish. • Summer (July-August): This is when Platte Bay sees some of its best King salmon action, with Chinooks moving into the area. Trolling deep waters with various techniques often produces big fish during this time. • Fall (September-October): Coho salmon fishing peaks during this period, especially when they are staging near the river mouth in Platte Bay. As fish run upstream to spawn, anglers can often catch a variety of species, including steelhead and lake trout. |
